About The Editor
For nearly three decades, Tony Ciavarro has been a defining force in the evolution of modern tattooing. Emerging in the mid-1990s, Ciavarro was among a generation of artists who helped ignite what would become known as the New School tattoo movement—a radical departure from the conventions that had dominated tattoo art for decades.
Beginning in 1996, Ciavarro started creating tattoo flash that looked unlike much of what was available at the time. His approach was rooted in drawing, illustration, exaggerated forms, bold color, and a genuine dedication to fine art. Rather than simply repeating the established visual language of traditional tattooing, he saw the skin as a canvas with limitless possibilities.
As his career progressed from drawing to tattooing, Ciavarro developed a visual language that was unmistakably his own. He pushed proportions, challenged traditional rules, amplified color and movement, and brought an illustrator’s mindset into the tattoo world. His work became part of a larger cultural shift that transformed how people viewed tattooing—not simply as a craft or form of decoration, but as a legitimate and evolving art form.
Ciavarro’s contribution belongs to an era when tattoo artists were beginning to break away from the boundaries of the past and redefine what could be created on skin. By challenging conventions and relentlessly pursuing his own artistic vision, he became part of the generation that helped lay the groundwork for the explosive creativity and diversity that defines contemporary tattooing today.
